Energetic and gnarly is one way to
describe
They Live
, the debut album from
Midland’s band Weak13. From the
opening bars of “My Last Summer With
You” it’s clear this band likes to rattle
bones and entertain. If you think
Wolfsbane meets John Bush era
Anthrax, with a sprinkling of Foo
Fighters you might have some idea of
the sort music this threesome likes to
make. Despite the potential mass
appeal of many the songs on offer this is
no over-produced saccharin toss, instead
you get raw lyrical honesty, fused with dirty
guitar riffs.
Highlights include the bawdy “Down On Me”, the
deliciously dark “Happiest Undertaker” and the off kilter
“Loyal Coward”. A special mention must go to the unusually
experimental paranoia of “Cameras Are Everywhere” it could
almost be an unearthed Nirvana rarity.
For those that prefer listening to actual songs over and above having their
ears needlessly pummelled by uninspired heaviness, then
They Live
is a delightfully engaging
work. The band has managed to find an enjoyable balance between
riotous Rock and Metal. Much like the ethos contained in Motorhead’s “(We Are) The Road
Crew” they are happy throughout the album to make a noise and party anyway they see fit!
Weak13 have spawned a monster with They Live.
