Without the continued passion and collaboration between the people who love it, the live music scene wouldn't exist. It was great to see local businesses including promoters, venues, bands & media come together to create the first ever Birmingham Music Awards in May (check out our feature on page 16) and long may it continue. The experience we've had produc- ing & distributing RGG since taking over in February has given us a much greater appreciation of the state of the live scene in theWest Midlands and in terms of the vol- ume & variety of events it's very healthy to say the least. That said, most of us are aware of the fine margins that pretty much all busi- nesses are running on these days and it doesn't take much of a downturn to tip a venue over the edge so we must all pull together to keep up the good work. Somewhat surprisingly, we recently came across an establishment in Birmingham, who would not display our magazine, giving the reason that they only promote their own gigs on their premises. One single venue, against hundreds of others, who are glad to put RGG out for their customers. We appreciate that as a business, stocking a publication listing other venues' events might be seen as helping the competition but com- ing from a business whose primary function is a cafe, not a live venue, it was unexpected and is certainly a situation that we are very glad is a one-off! To everyone else who’s doing a marvellous job promoting the local live music scene: ...keep it up! Fat BlokeWith No Tattoos
