During the past couple of years, I've noticed that gig lighting in most small venues, has become standardisd & unimaginitive. The seemingly ubiquitous pink-green-blue, pink-green-blue, pink-green-blue repitition, along with fit-inducing patterns whizzing across the ceiling, down the walls and along the floor before blinding you, makes me feel like I'm at a wedding anniversary disco wondering what time the buffet is opening. Is it that a glut of affordable, standardised lighting gear has flooded the market? Are over-worked lighting technicians who granted, may also be the sound engineer/venue manager/glass collector, being lazy and using default, preset functions? Whatever the cause, the result is the blandification (an actual word ...I hope) of the visual spectacle at gigs. I take a lot of photos at gigs - nowt fancy, just with a smartphone and I find myself converting most photos to black & white to negate the flood of pink, green & blue. Projected backdrops seem to be more common now, helping to create a more unique visual - especially when projected over the bands rather than just behind. This can create some great ef- fects and combine with the music to make gigs just that bit different from one another. Who's going to try something different?
